As one of the most popular cleaning devices in any home, robot vacuums make cleaning a much easier task. It can be fun to come up with unique names for robot vacuum cleaners. Every time you introduce a new appliance or object, it’s important to give it a name that sticks with it for as long as possible.
Think about some of the weird and wacky names that other appliances have had recently. How many of them could you forget again as soon as you heard them? The trick is to find something short and sweet but also memorable so that your new friend won’t be forgotten anytime soon. Here are 10 creative ways to give your new robot vacuum a name!
Shorten the name of the manufacturer
If you know the manufacturer of the vacuum, you can use this as the first part of the name. For example, if you have a Samsung vacuum, try to call it something like Sammy. This is a fun option because it’s short and easy to remember. You could take this further and find a rhyme that could become part of the new name. A Hoover vacuum could become a Huffy.
Create a portmanteau of two words
A portmanteau is a word with two parts that are combined to make one word. For example, we have “smog” which is a combination of “smoke” and “fog”. The vacuum cleaner uses air to clean which is a mixture of smoke and fog so it makes sense. A robot vacuum is made up of two parts: a vacuum and a robot. So, you could try combining these two words to create a new one. For example, if you have a Roomba vacuum, you could try to combine “robot” and “vacuum” to come up with something like Robu.
Come up with a clever word or phrase
A vacuum cleaner is a useful household appliance so you could try to think of something clever about it. For example, a Roomba vacuum is a device that goes around the house cleaning for you, you could call it Wanderer. A Dyson vacuum is a vacuum cleaner made by the famous British inventor James Dyson, so you could call it James.
Use a spiffy acronym
If you know the full name of the appliance, it is sometimes possible to use the first letters of each word to create an acronym. Dyson Outsize Vacuum would become Dav. I have a Eufy robot vacuum, so I could call it Erv or play on that a little bit with Irving.
Simply use your vacuum’s specs as a name
If you don’t want to try to come up with something from scratch, you can use the specifications of your vacuum to think of names for robot vacuum cleaners. For example, if you have a Dyson vacuum, you could call it a D95 because it is a Dyson model 95 vacuum cleaner. This is an easy option that you could do with any model of vacuum cleaner.
Name it after something you love
You can name your robot vacuum after anything you love. For example, if you love your pet dog, you could call it “Fido”. You could also try to name it after a song or a movie. For example, if you liked “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel, you could call your vacuum “Silence” because a vacuum is meant to make silence.
Come up with an absurdist name
If you really don’t want to try to find a name to suit the vacuum, you can simply name it whatever you want. You could try to think of something absurd or random.
Or you could name it after something that reminds you of the cleaning process. For example, if you are on a messy project, you could call your robot vacuum “The Cleaning Machine” or “Cleaning Frenzy”. This is an easy and fun option that you could do no matter what vacuum you have.
Rotate a set of possible names and ask people to pick one
If you have a difficult time finding a name or you have a lot of friends over and they start to get bored, you could ask everyone to suggest a name.
You could have everyone write their ideas on a piece of paper, then put them in a bowl or basket and then draw out one name at a time and discuss it.
You could also try asking people to write a name on their phone and then have the phone be on shuffle to see what comes up.
Use a Name Generator
When I write novels, I use name generators fairly often to come up with character names. There are tons of name generators out there on Google to help you find names for robot vacuum cleaners, but here are a few of my favorites:
Borrow a Name
Minion – This is the name of my robo-vac. Maybe not too creative, but my cats know to run when I tell them Minion is coming.
Felix – From The Odd Couple
R2D2 – The famous droid in Star Wars who keeps everyone in line
Mouse – Also a droid in Star Wars
H.A.L. – The AI from 2001: A Space Odyssey
Wall-E – From the movie of the same name
Kreacher – The crotchety house elf in Harry Potter (Dobby or Winky are possible alternatives)
Alfred – The butler in Batman
Jarvis – Similarly, the butler and voice of Tony Stark’s AI in the Marvelverse
Dusty – The one who picks up dust in the house
Don’t name it at all
If you simply don’t have time to try to find new names for robot vacuum cleaners and you don’t want to name it something crazy, you could simply not name it at all.
This could be for a couple of reasons though. For example, if your vacuum is new, you might want to keep it nameless for a few weeks or months until it grows on you and you feel more connected to it. You could also name your robot vacuum something silly and annoying and then be asked to change it by someone who is allergic to the name.
Keep in mind that you can always change the name later
It’s important to keep in mind that you can always change the name of your vacuum cleaner later on if you find that it doesn’t suit your vacuum.
It’s far better to give your vacuum a name that you’re not happy with than to leave it nameless. You can always change it later on if you find that the name is not appropriate for your vacuum. Simply be sure to take notes of why you like the name and why you dislike the others so that you can remember it later on.
No matter what name you choose for your vacuum cleaner, it is important to make sure that the name is something that you will remember. The best way to do this is to make sure that the name makes sense and that it is something that you enjoy saying.
